A sister pattern to the popular White Queen stole, this design was inspired by the ethereal artwork created by frost and snow during winter and named for the icy queen that ruled C. S. Lewis’s Narnia. Jadis is my classic top-down short row crescent shawl with three size options, Large, Medium, and Small, all of which can be customized even further, and an optional bottom edging for all sizes is also included. The geometric lace pattern, reminiscent of snowflakes, is easy enough even for a novice lace knitter because it includes only basic stitches and the wrong side rows are all simply purled.

There are beads added throughout the lace and three different beading options are charted, but the project will work just as well without any beads. All sizes of the shawl can be worked in lace or fingering, as well as sport weight and DK yarns (heavier yarns may require extra yardage and larger needles). Solid, tonal, and gradient or ombre yarns will work with this lace pattern beautifully.

Finished Measurements:
Large: 42” / 106.50 cm (center depth) x 70” / 178 cm (wingspan)
Medium: 23” / 58 cm (center depth) x 63” / 160 cm (wingspan)
Small: 19” / 48 cm (center depth) x 56” / 142 cm (wingspan)
Note: Measurements taken after blocking.

Yarn (gradient, solid or tonal colors):
Large: Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 1100 - 1200 yards; the Large sample was completed with 1095 yards of Cascade Yarns Alpaca Lace (100% Baby Alpaca; 437 yards / 50 grams); color: 1419
Medium: Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 485 - 535 yards; the Medium sample was completed with 480 yards of Cascade Yarns Forest Hills (51% Silk, 49% Merino Wool; 785 yards / 100 grams); color: 01
Small: Any lace or fingering weight yarn, approx 315 - 350 yards; the Small sample was completed with 310 yards of Cascade Yarns Heritage Silk Paints (85% Merino Superwash Wool, 15% Mulberry Silk; 427 yards / 100 grams); color: 9788

Gauge:
24 sts / 36 rows = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette, unblocked, using lace weight yarn and US 6 / 4.00 mm needles
Note: Correct gauge is not critical for this project, but your final measurements and yardage requirements may vary if your gauge is different.

Needles:
US 6 / 4.00 mm circular needle, 32” or longer
US 7 / 4.50 mm circular needle, 32” or longer
US 8 / 5.00 mm circular needle, 32” or longer
US 10.5 / 6.50 mm needle (for bind off only)

Notions:
Crochet hook size 0.75mm or 0.60mm (small enough to fit through holes of beads, optional)
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
Blocking pins

Beads (optional):
lots of beads / fewer beads / just edges
Large 1801 / 473 / 237
Medium 1038 / 271 / 145
Small 309 / 177 / 115
Note: These are exact numbers, purchasing a few extra beads is recommended.
Bead size depends on the weight of your yarn. Because of the relatively large number of beads in the “lots of beads” option, a large lace weight shawl would probably work best with 8/0 3.00mm beads to avoid straining the yarn too much, but the same shawl worked in fingering or sport weight could easily support 6/0 4.00mm beads.
